Beant’s daughter denied entry into Burail Jail

Unlike yesterday, the Burail Jail, where the quantum of sentence to the accused in Beant Singh assassination case was to be pronounced today, turned into a fortress.

The security was so tight that even family members of the former Chief Minister were not allowed inside the jail premises.

Gurkanwal Kaur, daughter of late Beant Singh, and his grandson Ravneet Singh had to return disappointed as the security agencies did not allow them to enter the jail premises.

Yesterday, they (the police) gave the reason that atmosphere was volatile and our presence could aggravate the situation. But, today they did not bother to give even the reasons for denial, said a visibly upset Gurkanwal Kaur, who was social welfare minister during the Amarinder Singh regime.

For us, being present at the time of verdict was an emotional moment.

Scientists Examine Oral, Systemic Health Link

Physicians and dentists will have a unique opportunity to discuss the link between oral health and overall health at a program on January 18 at the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS).While scientists, health care providers, policymakers, and the public recognize oral health's importance to health and well-being, we have more to learn about oral disease management as part of healthcare."Our understanding of the link has increased rapidly in recent years, especially in regards to cardiac disease, renal disease, and during pregnancy," said Stacie Bloom, PhD, Life Sciences Director at NYAS. "However, care providers rarely have a chance to communicate about collaborative treatment options. We are thrilled to be working with the dental community for the first time on this health integration program."The meeting, entitled From Basic Science to Clinical Practice and Policy: A Medical-Dental Dialogue on the Relationship between Periodontal Disease and Systemic Health, allows dentists and physicians to discuss prospective research and therapeutic options for periodontal disease and the systemic symptoms associated with this disease, and also to consider needed changes in policy and medical/dental education to improve related health delivery systems.

Plenty of obstacles to overcome in megaproject: Williams

A variety of hurdles must yet be overcome to develop the Lower Churchill hydroelectric megaproject, Newfoundland and Labrador's premier cautions.

'It's moving nowhere but up,' says Danny Williams of the market for hydro power.(CBC)

Danny Williams told CBC News that he remains confident that the Lower Churchill — which the province is developing alone, but must sooner or later obtain co-operation from other governments — will proceed.

"We have never been better positioned. We have never been better prepared," Williams told CBC News.

"The market is right, the prices are certainly in the ballpark, it's moving nowhere but up. There never could be a better time to do this project," he said. "[But] we have some hurdles."

Indeed, Williams said the chances of the Lower Churchill project proceeding are about 50 per cent.

PPP sticks to demand for UN investigation

Senator Babar Awan, a front-line leader of the PPP, led the protest rally together with other party leaders belonging to Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

Speaking on the occasion, he accused the government of wiping out vital evidence and protecting those behind the murder of Ms Bhutto.

If the government of President Pervez Musharraf has nothing to hide, he should himself contact the UN and request to carry out the investigation, Mr Awan said.

He expressed his deep concern over the most critical situation prevailing in the country, and said an anti-state campaign was being run under a conspiracy to destabilise Pakistan.

The PPP with the support of all the four provinces and Azad Kashmir will defeat every move to harm the country, he added.

Who Do We Vote For This Time Around?

Twice before, we have begun the process to stop this man, and twice we have failed. Eight years of our lives as Americans will have been lost, the world left in upheaval against us… and yet now, today, we hope against hope that our moment has finally arrived, that the amazingly powerful force of the Republican Party will somehow be halted. But we know that the Democrats are experts at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, and if there's a way to blow this election, they will find it and do it with gusto.

Do you feel the same as me? That the Democratic front-runners are a less-than-stellar group of candidates, and that none of them are the "slam dunk" we wish they were? Of course, there are wonderful things about each of them. Any one of them would be infinitely better than what we have now.
