Habs defend Saku Koivu's French

Just another bizarre example of this very dysfunctional sibling of a province.

I can't see the Flames, Leafs, Canucks or any other Canadian team/province worrying about whether this player or that player can speak whatever language.

If he's paid to stop pucks or put them in the net and he does it well, let him speak Spanish if he wants.

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

The 31st Team

Jones blew out a knee playing basketball and the Nationals released him in December. They quickly re-signed him to a minor league deal, though he'll miss the entire 2008 season. Last season, Jones worked comfortably at 89-92 mph and touched 93-94 with a fastball that has late life. He flashes an average changeup with good deception and a slider with decent spin but not a lot of depth. Washington attributed much of Jones' progress to an improvement in his work ethic from past seasons. He needs to become more consistent with his secondary pitches, and he needs to improve against righthanders. With his frame, arm strength and potentially good offspeed stuff, Jones still can become a solid starter in the big leagues if he can recover from his knee injury. Alternatives are available to polluting coal-fired power plant Wind now competitive with coal - no CO2

The Post and Courier recently reported Santee Cooper plans to build a 600 megawatt, coal-fired power plant in the next decade in Florence County at a cost of $1 billion. It is estimated the plant will emit four to five million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere annually.

Given the undeniable scientific evidence that man- made emissions of greenhouse gasses are accelerating global warming, such a decision is irresponsible.
