BLACK AND BLUE: Rodriguez defends himself against West Virginia's ...

The date of the file disposal, Dec. 18, was one day after his introductory news conference at U-M.

News stories have emerged from West Virginia the past few weeks, all of which paint Rodriguez in an undesirable light: reports that he did not resign face-to-face with the athletic director to the "missing" documents to a Thursday report in the Charleston Daily Mail that he called U-M recruits with his West Virginia cell phone before he returned it.

"I did not call a single ... I don't recall exactly the particular time or how I made the call, but I never called a single Michigan recruit before I resigned as a coach at West Virginia," Rodriguez said.

While he said he believed he resigned the moment he told his team Dec. 16, his official resignation was not filed with the university until Dec.

State House leaders push new tax break

So more affluent Georgians who don't receive a check would also get a tax break if the measure is approved.

The savings: on average about $72 for individuals, $144 for couples without children, a little more for families with kids.

The final stimulus plan hasn't been approved by Congress, but President Bush and congressional leaders have supported putting $150 billion into the package. Under the plan, most individuals would get up to $600, couples would get $1,200 and each dependent child would bring families an extra $300.

The payments would start phasing out for individuals with adjusted gross incomes of more than $75,000 and couples with incomes of more than $150,000.

Without his bill, Martin said recipients would have to pay the 6 percent state income tax on those stimulus checks.

Henry K. Lee is liveblogging the Hans Reiser murder trial. See his most recent Chronicle article on the trial here, and all his blog entries here.

12:17 p.m.: Oakland police crime-scene technician Bruce Christensen testified this morning that he processed Nina Reiser's 2001 Honda Odyssey minivan Sept. 9, 2006, the day when resident Chris Bunn found it on Fernwood Drive off Highway 13. Bunn has testified that the vehicle had been there for three or four days.

Prosecutor Paul Hora flashed pictures of the minivan and its contents on a screen as Christensen narrated. Among the things found in the Odyssey was a purse, a compact mirror, a comb, a cell phone charger and a flip-style cell phone in the open position and with its battery detached, Christensen testified. He said search dogs were directed to some of those items in hopes that they could detect her scent and eventually find her.

Canine caregivers help autistic kids

Matthew Plunk pulls away from Ajax but can't go more than 2 1/2 feet, the length of the tethering strap securing him to the Great Pyrenees-boxer mix.

This, his parents say, is just one of the benefits of having an assistive dog to help their mildly autistic son navigate not just their Norcross home but the world outside.

Obama Wins Landslide In South Carolina

I don't plan to vote for either Obama or Clinton, either in the primaries or in the general election, although it would be fun to watch this race result in a brokered convention. As the Clintons' campaign has been the far more disgusting, I was glad the Democrats of South Carolina put them in their place. I only wished Edwards had outpolled them too.
