The buy-in: What's the right amount?

Always remember that the more chips you start with, the more likely that you'll end up facing large bets on the river.

So, if money is a concern, or if you don't trust yourself to make the right decisions under pressure, buy-in for the minimum. Alternatively, if you thrive under pressure and like to push around your opponents, go with the maximum buy-in. If there's no maximum, buy-in for an amount so that no one at the table has more chips than you.

How tough is the table in comparison to your skill level?

OK, you're a solid, winning player. But if you find yourself at a particularly tough table, protect yourself by buying in for less than you normally would. The more chips that are in play, the greater the advantage is to the most skilled players at the table.

A second Christian ministry is refusing to meet a Thursday deadline for a Senate investigation into preachers' salaries, perks and travel, The Associated Press has learned. Benny Hinn of World Healing Center Church Inc. and Benny Hinn Ministries of Grapevine, Texas, said in a statement to the AP on Thursday that he will not respond to the inquiry until next year. A lawyer for preacher Creflo Dollar of World Changers Church International in suburban Atlanta had said Wednesday that the investigation should be referred to the IRS or the Senate panel should get a subpoena for the documents. Both Hinn and Dollar are regents for Oral Roberts University. Sen.

In the Jan. 13 article "Rendell Vows to Press Ahead on Health Care," Gov. Rendell threatened to campaign against House and Senate Republicans if they do not support his heath-care plan.

He states, "You will find me in every contested electoral district, Senate or House ... I will hit every district time after time after time."

In an era of much-needed reform and bipartisanship, this blatant political bribery is despicable and insults the intelligence of the people of Pennsylvania. Not only does his proposed plan place our health in jeopardy, he continues to play political games with the future of our health care.

It is clear that health care is not a priority for Mr. Rendell but rather another platform for his political agenda. By blackmailing Republican legislators, Gov.

Warriors may like life on a tightrope

CHICAGO — It would be an understatement to say the Golden State Warriors play like an acrobat walks a tightrope.

Better yet, imagine someone moonwalking 30 feet above ground — blindfolded, across a strip of used dental floss. That's more like Warriors basketball — equal parts breathtaking and heartstopping; dazzling and dangerous.

Golden State's high-risk, high-reward style, while captivating, has its playoff chances looking precarious. It's mid-January, and still no one knows if the Warriors are headed for a fourth or fifth seed, or will miss the playoffs. They have the talent to compete amongst the league's elite, but they have the mood swings of a team headed for the draft lottery.

With the Western Conference so loaded, decreasing the room for error, that's arguably not a good thing.

Vallemar School hosting A Night on the Nile' dance and auction

Vallemar's third dance and auction, "A Night on the Nile" will be held on Feb. 9 from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Pacifica Community Center, 540 Crespi Drive. Preparations are under way with beautiful decorations planned, thanks to Alana Kyle.

"We will venture back to the time of pharaohs, pyramids, and King Tutuncommon with all the gold and jewels associated befitting of royalty and guests of our special night," organizers said.

The event will be a catered affair with hearty and delicious appetizers prepared by Vallemar's own chef, Keith Hammerich. Chef Hammerich has planned a wonderful assortment of appetizers to please every palate. Scrumptious desserts, generously donated by the French Patisserie, will also be provided.

For entertainment this year, DJ KenFused will please guests with a well-thought out selection of music for listening, and after the silent and live auction are over, you can dance, dance, dance.

Why the Mafia Loves Garbage

Star defense attorney Preston Burton was appointed yesterday to defend "D.C. madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey in federal court. (Palfrey, who has lost most of her assets to government seizure, had recently fired the public defender assigned to her case.) Burton has defended Enron executives and other high-profile clients like Monica Lewinsky, Aldrich Ames, and Robert Hanssen. How did he end up doing legal aid?

The judge asked him. "Indigent" defendants in a federal court—i.e., those who can't afford their own lawyers—get free representation from that district's federal public defender's office. (Given her notoriety, Palfrey had been assigned the services of the D.C.-office top dog, A.J. Kramer.) If the public defender can't participate in the case for some reason—a conflict with the defendant, for example, was the case between Palfrey and Kramer—the judge can ask a private lawyer to step in.

Seven boosts ad revenue, Nine bombs

CHANNEL 7 has again increased its share of national advertising revenue, while Channel 9 has recorded its worst ever result.

New figures released today by industry group Free TV Australia show that in the six months to December 2007, Seven expanded its dominance with a 38.85 per cent share of national advertising revenue.

Channel 10 was second with 30.84 per cent, followed by Nine, which only managed to secure 30.81 per cent.

It is the first time that Nine has had the lowest revenue of a commercial TV network.

Seven's share was almost 3 per cent up on figures from the same period last year, when it claimed a 35.89 per cent share of commercial TV advertising dollars.

From July to December 2006 Nine clinched a 33.8 per cent share, while Ten was clear last with 30.32 per cent.
