Duncan updates Rotary on TC
You do not need to be told things are changing at Taft College. A drive by will show that. For some time the school grounds have been a construction zone. Trucks, delivering building materials, workers putting their talents to work building Taft's new College. Students are in temporary housing as the work progresses, while much of the campus is fixing to be bigger and new, better equipped to teach and send students on to four year colleges or join today's work force.Former Superintendent Roe Darnell started the ball rolling two or more years ago with plans to fix what was broken and replace what could not be. Wednesday at the weekly meeting of the Taft Rotary Club, William Duncan who was Business Administrator, has taken over. Now it is his to finish. He brought Rotary up to date on the events taking place with data on what has been done, what will be done, and when it will be finished. One of the things that he was most interested was seeing that students would be able to move about the campus with a laptop computer and access the network from any location.
Smoking May Have Caused Deadly Beach House Fire
The students killed all died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning, and state medical examiners have concluded there was no evidence of other injuries. The preliminary report prepared by the SBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said survivors told investigators there were smoke detectors in the home and they activated during the fire. A final report on the investigation may not be complete for several weeks. The burned-out hulk of the home, which sits two blocks from the beach along a canal that connects to the Intracoastal Waterway, was surrounded by a chain-link fence Friday. Two of the four cars parked under the house during the fire had been removed. A 6-foot-high metal cross stood in the green grass near the lot, surrounded by seven white wooden crosses, each adorned with a red heart and a terra cotta angel.
NATURE NOTES Goes to BELIZE
I'M ON THE dive boat, and it's a familiar scenario for anyone who has dived the Red Sea. There is a clear blue sky and a blazing sun and the last thing you want to do is don a heavy black wetsuit and add to that your weight belt and all the other paraphernalia of scuba diving before plunging into the increasingly inviting water. Checks complete, there is the wonderfully satisfying moment of plunging into that water, sorting out the buoyancy, and entering this submarine world of corals, fish and myriad other creatures. And all the usual culprits are there. There are butterflyfish, angelfish, snappers and all the other old friends. But they are not the usual butterflyfish and angelfish and snappers. These are spot-finned, four-eyed and banded butterflyfish, grey angelfish and yellowtail snapper.
Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12
Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Cuba introduces biomaterials to reconstruct bones
Havana.– Cuban experts are working on the introduction of several procedures and biomaterials to improve the quality of healthcare services. In that regard, efforts are being made to develop a product known as Coralina HAP-200, which is used to restore damaged or lost bone tissues. Obtained from a coral called Porites, the material has proved to be highly effective for bone reconstructions, as it is chemically and morphologically similar to bone tissues. More than 10,000 patients have benefited from the new material, which is used in maxillofacial, cranial, endobuccal and dental surgeries, as well as in orthopedics and traumatology, and brain and plastic surgeries. Coralina HAP-200 has been introduced in more than 100 Cuban medical institutions, so the island nation is one of the countries in the world where the entire population has access to a first-class product.
